Adventist Blog Roundup
Posted February 2nd, 2008 by Marcel Schwantes
Peace Messenger: * Did you know that Anson Byington, the brother of John Byington, who became the first president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 1863, was also a fervent antislavery reformer since the 1830s? Adventist Peace Fellowship's official blog tells you all about it.
* Editor's correction: The February 3rd ATNewsbreak that was sent out to e-mail subscribers incorrectly listed Anson Byington, not his brother John Byington, as the first president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in 1863. We apologize for this mistake.
The Oregon Adventist Pastor: And you thought your job was easy? Pastor Greg Brothers tells of incidents involving disciplining church members, including a child molester.
Adventist Women 4 Peace: Zulema Ibarra, a senior at La Sierra University majoring in Emerging Voices in Cross-Cultural America, has taken over editorial responsibilties at Adventist Women 4 Peace blog. She replaces Professor Victoria Bresee, who has stepped down.
AdventistPerspective: Professor of Education at Cal State University, Chico and prolific blogger Andy Hanson makes a habit of reviewing articles / magazine editions from Adventist print publications. This month he reviews Adventist World and is not kind on the story about children preachers. Hanson: "Child evangelists have all too often been victimized and psychologically damaged by overzealous and ambitious parents. I can't help but reflect that Jesus' ministry was regional and began at age 30."
Wishing Doesn't Make It So: Theistic evolutionist blogger "Vera" continues her quest for truth. She writes: " In spite of my religious training...I had no idea what to do with the two accounts of creation in the opening chapters of Genesis. I began to follow the idea of natural selection to its logical conclusion, which led to a whole host of questions, including: Does God fit into this?" Start her journey here.
Intersections: To everyone's surprise, progressive pastor Ryan Bell informs his readers that he is actually a Weimar College (now Weimar Institute of Health & Education) graduate! He also reflects on the closing of the college, as reported.
Yentl's Song: Musings of an Out-of-Work SDA Pastor: The latest blog to emerge by a pastor, Monique Viljoen-Platts freely admits that she uses the title to "raise alarm and to signal that something is very wrong in any religious community which finds difficulty in allowing all it's members full participation in spiritual life in all the fullness of who God has created and called them to be." She dedicates her blog to clergy women and students of theology. So far it's a promising start.
