"I'm Sick of It!" - A Prophetic Sermon

Young Adventist pastors are increasingly using their pulpit to preach their political views and Pastor Trevor Kinlock of the historic Calvary Seventh-day Adventist church in Newport News, Virginia is no exception. On May 10, 2008, Kinlock delivered a sermon reminiscent of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's now controversial 2003 sermon “Confusing God and Government,” better known as the “God Damn America” sermon.

Kinlock's sermon, titled "I'm sick of it!" is making its way around the internet and getting attention from critics and supporters alike.

Drawing references to Jeremiah 23, Isaiah 58 and Deuteronomy 28, Kinlock describes the biblical prophet's role as outspoken, critical and controversial -- one who calls others to obedience and who delivers a message that is "universal, speaks to nations, social conditions, and religious institutions and orthodoxy." Kinlock adds, “'Woe', and 'repent' are the two consistent words of the prophet."

Then Kinlock's own prophetic message ensued with a political and social onslaught, leaving no stone unturned. He went after the Bush administration, social injustice and racism, the rich, elitist preachers who pimp the Gospel, the segregated Adventist church, wife beaters, and even his own African-American community, calling black people to repent.

Kinlock may also be the first Adventist pastor to use the words "penis" and "vagina" in the same sentence in a broadcast sermon. In denouncing sexual promiscuity in the African-American community, Kinlock shouts from the pulpit to a cheering congregation, "You have perverted your sexual organs that God intended to be holy. And God is not pleased. As a matter of fact, I pronounce a curse right now on every unfaithful penis in the name of Jesus! [applause and cheering] God curse your penis. I pronounce a curse on every whore mongering vagina! I pray, God, let it fall off. [applause and cheering] I pray God, give 'em a disease. Lord, let something terrible happen. If you ain't gonna use it for God, I pray you can't use it ever in your life!" [applause and cheering]

Below are more portions of the sermon excerpted. I encourage you to listen to the full sermon for the entire context. He does end his sermon with a touching altar call and moving prayer for repentance and a clean heart.

Excerpts:

And so I declare this afternoon, “Woe unto you, George Bush, for lying about weapons of mass destruction. Woe unto you for invading and destroying a nation, and arrogantly trading the blood of thousands of American soldiers for oil and strategic dominance. Woe unto you! Shame on you!

Woe unto you for your negligent and inept response to hurricane Katrina that left thousands of innocent people displaced, disposessed and abandoned! You ought to be ashamed! Woe unto you!

Repent, America, for exploiting the poor and enlarging the rich. God is not pleased with that….

Woe unto you America for turning a blind eye to police brutality and shedding the blood of Sean Bell and Abna Louimer and Rodney King. That's wrong! That's dirty! That's a lie! And God's going to deal with you!

Woe unto you George Bush for preaching and talking 'no child left behind' while leaving behind thousands of inner city schools to inadequate funding, insufficient staffing, and sub-standard facility. Woe! My kids deserve better than that! Your kids deserve better than that!

Woe unto you, America, for glorifying violence, perverting sexuality, debasing the institution of marriage, and worshipping the “almighty dollar.” Woe! Woe! Woe! God is not happy with you. God is not pleased with you. God is going to deal. Judgment day is coming…

Woe unto the black community for abandoning the prophetic faith of our fathers, for the empty goods of malt liquor, chrome rims, and gross materialism. Woe, black folk! You know better than that! Your grandma raised you better than that! Woe unto you black community! Woe unto you black people for making excuses for your miserable conditions, rather than embracing self-determination and faith in God to overcome the forces of oppresion. Woe unto you. Stop making excuses. We've always been dealt with a bad hand and still overcome with God on our side.

Repent black parents for lowering the standard of achievement in your home and tolerating mediocrity from your kids. Woe. Repent parents for setting such a bad example that our children can't even respect us no more.
